Saturday’s weather arguably summed up Silverstone in a nutshell - a strong breeze, sunshine and intermittent showers. When the sun did come out it was, even for a brief moment, a stunning British summer-feeling ensued.
We were also thrilled to welcome the CEO of Silverstone, Stuart Pringle, Lord Hay and their respective guests to Escapade to see the development in all its glory, and to sample some of the delectable delights offered in the bar and restaurant before Qualifying started. Jenson Button also chose Saturday to host the launch of his new collaboration whisky with Coachbuilt and Williams Racing. Only 3,000 bottles of the whisky have been made globally so if you fancy a tipple trackside, then don’t delay.
Q1 started with almost all of the grid on intermediate tyres as wet weather had dampened the track. The affectionately-known ‘Britcedes’ duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton topped the leaderboard, with Aussie Oscar Piastri in third. An unfortunate trip to the gravel trap from Sergio Perez ended the session. Q2 was fully dry, and offered some interesting developments, with Fernando Alonso, Nico Hulkenberg and Lando Norris all sneaking their way into the top 10.
With three British drivers all within seconds of each other at the top spot, fans around Silverstone were perched on the edge of their seats waiting to see what would happen. Hamilton went fastest by three-hundredths of a second, but it was George Russell who eventually claimed that all-important pole position by a tenth of a second. With Hamilton second and Norris third, the Silverstone fans were treated to the first British 1-2-3 in qualifying for over 55 years. Verstappen dragged a damaged Red Bull to fourth on the grid with Piastri in fifth.
The atmosphere was electric, and the sun came out to play. British fans were certainly in high spirits as they then sat down to watch the quarter-final of the Euros on the big screens around Silverstone. England went on to beat Switzerland in penalties 5-3, leading to an atmosphere around the race track like never before.
